Redact a PDF for free and check that sensitive content is removed
To redact a PDF, use a removal operation and verify the exported file. Drawing a black rectangle, cropping a page or flattening a form alone does not establish that the underlying content is gone.
Choose redaction when information must be removed
Edit PDF changes text and page objects. Redact PDF is the dedicated tool for permanently removing selected text or areas from the output. Use it for content you are authorized to redact, and keep the original separately if you still need a complete source.
Fictional example: a sample report includes the invented identifier DEMO-ACCOUNT-4821. You want to share the report without that identifier, including a second occurrence on another page. Practice with this fictional content before handling a real document; a successful test does not replace reviewing the actual file.
- Open Redact PDF and add a non-private test PDF.
- Choose the document and page containing the information to remove.
- Select the intended text or draw an area that covers the complete sensitive content.
Select text or draw over a scanned area
Select text works with selectable PDF text. Words inside a photographed or scanned page can be image pixels rather than text objects; use Draw area or Add area for those regions. Include the whole identifier, barcode or image detail that must be removed. A selection that clips the last digit leaves that digit outside the intended removal area.
Adjust areas lets you move and resize a selection. Precise position and size fields are available when dragging is awkward. With an area selected, arrow keys move it, Alt plus arrow keys resize it, Shift makes a larger change, and Delete or Backspace removes the selection. Review each page rather than assuming a rectangle on one page covers similar content everywhere.
Review matching text and every document in a batch
The Text to remove field finds exact matching text in the available PDF text runs. A phrase split across runs, different punctuation or an image-only scan can prevent the expected match. Inspect the selected areas and check repeated occurrences individually; do not rely on one typed phrase to find every form of an identifier.
Manual selections belong to their source document. In a batch, a PDF with no selected area can be copied unchanged when no matching text is supplied. Use the document chooser and inspect each output. A file being present in the result list does not prove it was redacted.
Understand the saved PDF
DamnPDFs rebuilds affected pages from scrubbed image pixels at 300 DPI so the selected content is not retained inside their original image resources. It adds an invisible text layer for text runs outside the selected areas. The changed pages are no longer the original collection of editable text and picture objects, so inspect fine print and graphics in the saved output.
Pages without redaction areas retain their page content. Visible form answers and annotations are flattened into permanent page content and are no longer interactive. Leave Remove hidden data enabled when you want the available sanitization step, but do not treat that option or an automated scan as proof that every private detail anywhere in the document has been found.
Check the exported copy before sharing
Open the saved result at a readable zoom and examine every redacted area and every other occurrence of the sensitive content. Search for a distinctive removed phrase and try text extraction as additional checks. Search alone can miss text that was always an image, so combine it with visual inspection; a black-looking preview alone is also insufficient.
Review document properties, attachments and other information relevant to your sharing task. Downloaded originals, previous versions, email attachments and copies outside this output are not changed by redacting this file. Keep the source and redacted copy clearly named so the original is not shared accidentally.
- Save a separate redacted result and open the exported PDF.
- Check every affected page visually, then search and extract text where applicable.
- Review the complete document and share only the checked result.
