Remove an image background and save a transparent PNG
Background removal separates a subject from its surroundings. The useful result is a clean edge at the size where the image will actually be used.
Start with a clear source
Use a photo you own or have permission to change. A well-lit subject against a different-coloured background gives the remover more useful information than a blurred, dark or low-contrast photo. Cropping out unrelated surroundings can make review easier, but it cannot add detail that the camera missed.
Fictional example: a small shop photographs a ceramic mug on a desk for its catalogue. The handle, rim and shadow need careful inspection after removal because their edges may resemble the desk.
- Open Remove background and add the photo.
- Run background removal using the processing mode shown by the tool.
- Compare the cutout with the original before saving.
Check difficult edges at full size
Inspect hair, fur, glass, thin straps, handles and holes. Automatic segmentation can remove part of the subject or leave a fringe of background. Use the cutout refinement controls for the affected area and compare it with the source.
Check the image against contrasting backgrounds, not just the preview’s checkerboard. A white fringe can disappear on a white preview and become obvious on a dark product card. Keep a separate original so a cleanup mistake can be corrected.
Choose PNG when transparency matters
Download the PNG cutout when another app needs the transparent background. JPEG does not support an alpha channel. If you convert the result to JPG in Compress images, its transparent areas become white.
WebP and AVIF can also retain transparency in the image compressor, but some upload forms and older apps do not accept them. Check the actual saved file in the receiving app instead of relying on its filename alone.
Finish the image for its actual use
For a website, compare a suitably resized version with the full-size cutout. For an application form, follow the current instructions for dimensions, background and file type; a transparent result is not automatically acceptable.
Removing the background does not anonymize the subject or prove permission to use it. It also does not remove text or logos that remain on the subject. Review the complete image, then keep or clear the temporary workspace according to your needs.
